Didn't get it all done

I only had 6 hats to get done for the holidays & I only managed to get 5 of them done. Well I did get 6 done, but my word did I fail at gauge & it would need someone with a really big head for it to fit. I didn't get 3 of them in the mail in time either.

I did get my mother's best friend's mom's (did you follow that?) old knitting booklets. My mom's best friend doesn't knit she crochets; she's been holding on to these booklets because they are old & are a piece of her mom. She sent them to me because she knew I would love them & enjoy them. It made me really happy. I'll try to get some photos of them, there are some from the 50s & some from the mid-90s.

Oh me, oh my, where do I start?

Been a whole lotta crazy at my house lately as you may have guessed by my absence. There was some knitting done, but not very much. I've mostly been caught up in getting evaluations done for the girl-child through our school district. She's had some behaviors that spoke to me of being outside the common. She had about a billion tests & evaluations & in the end they agreed with my original opinion that she has Autism. She'll be doing some 1-on-1 work with the speech therapist to get some better communication skills & with the occupational therapist to get some more skills for writing & comfort being on swings & stuff. They will also help her work on "reading" people as she's not as good as she could be with that.

On the knitting front I'm still chugging away on my sweater; no pics it's been icky out here & the color photographs so poorly indoors. I did finish a hat I meant to get done back in Oct & the recipient (roommate's sister) adores it & had been harassing me for ages to get it done. It's a Capucine (Rav link too).
Capucine

My sister passed away in Jan a few years ago. She had worn her earlobes stretched for at least 20 years. I have decided to stretch my lobes to have a visual maker on my body in remembrance of her. I'm up to a 14g-12g. I was up to a 12g, but had taken my plugs out to wear some dangles & when I went to bed I took the dangles out & forgot to put the plugs back in so I dropped a size overnight. I'm hoping they'll go back up to the 12g pretty quick.

Anyhow there's my mega-update.

My winter hat shall be

This one!
Handspun Winter Hat

The color is a bit off, it's more green that the photo shows. I usually like to use no flash & natural sunlight, but early winter in the midwest doesn't really have good sunny days. The yarn is handspun & is a Merino/Silk blend. It was a treat to knit up & I've had the yarn for over a year & finally decided it was time to knit it. I always have trouble knitting up handspun, I'm worried if I mess it up then I will have wasted the spinners time & skill. I need to get over that attitude since I've still got about 1/3 of this skein left & a whole nother one that I'd love to make something else with.

The Girl

My daughter is 5 & we've known for some time she's a bit different than other kids her age. We've known for years really. I finally decided that it would be best to get an evaluation to see if she's just really quirky or if she's got something more clinical going on. Our state has these early childhood evaluations they do so I chose to start there. They listened to the concerns I had, talked to her old pre-school (who saw the same issues) & are doing a follow-up tomorrow here at the house. They will do a more in depth study of her history & then watch her play & ask her questions.

I have been homeschooling her, but I'm wondering if she need a more rigidly structured program than I can offer. (I am undiagnosed ADD, so it's just about impossible for me to design & stick to a highly structured program.) Her old pre-school called & they had an opening because a child moved. They've worked with her for the last 2 years & are very used to her issues. I am really glad she can go back there again this year. It's 3 days a week for 3 hours. We will still be doing kinder at home so she'll remain on the same grade level if she ever does go "real" school.

What I've been knitting lately

Owl Hat
A Who Hat for the roommate, it's made with Stitch & Bitch line of yarn & is the bamboo blend one.

Damn Bella Mittens
Some Bella Mittens for a dear friend who loves the Twilight crap. I'm running behind on them, but they will be done before the snow falls & that's the important part.

Blanket Square for Patience Ann
I just finished up this blanket square for a dear sweet woman who lost her husband suddenly. My heart breaks for her & I hope this blanket helps her feel the hugs from all of us knitters in the computer who are thinking of her & sending her love.

I also finished up a hat for my dad's wife & am still chugging along with the blue sweater as well as the red one.

Owl Hats for Everyone!

So I'm kinda on a hat kick again, but this time it's Owl hats. Isn't that the best hat pattern? (Answer: Yes, yes it is.) I made a newborn version using DK weight & it's so cute (not blocked yet, sorry).
Baby Owl Hat

I've cast-on another one in the adult size already, I love this hat.

I have been working on the blue sweater for a bit & I am doing a few mods on it; doing M1s instead of YOs for the raglan & no puffy sleeves. Well I was knitting along & had marked up my pattern to change those two things & was blindly knitting. One spot called for 2 rows of purls on the shoulder to help the shoulder sit better with the puffy arm going on. I knit them & then realized they'd look like crap with the flat sleeves so I dropped my stitches & picked them up again across both shoulders & they came out great! I was sure I'd mess up & have to frog the whole thing & start over.

What's new?

Nothing crazy, but a lot of tiny things. I had my birthday & got some wonderful gifts. My roommate got me a pair of shoes & a small sculpture I was longing for.
My new shoesLooking for her home

My mom & dad both sent cash, so some of that went towards some new glasses (which should be here in a 2-4 weeks), about 1/2 of it went towards the tattoo savings fund & the rest went towards this
Knitting Machine
I found it at the thrift store & everything in the photo came with it, all for $35 + tax. I will need to get a sponge bar for it & figure out how to use it as I know nothing about machine knitting.

I finished the hat I was working on

Master J's Hat w/Brim FoldedMaster J's Hat
I suck at blocking hats & I think it shows here. I do love how it came out looking like stripes, I adore this hat!

I went down to the farmer's market & found the most perfect tomato ever! I don't eat tomatoes & even I want a bite of this one.
Yummy Tomato
It's more purple than the photo shows & it's really juicy. It was called a something purple or a purple something. I can't recall, all these heirloom tomatoes have funky names & I can't keep them straight.

Got some garlic too, look at these nummy things

So that's what's new here.

Uncluttering

When we first moved in to this home back in Feb we did so in stages. So for the first month we only had about 1/2 of out possessions & it was so wonderful to live so uncluttered. Once we got everything in here I decided I didn't want to live this cluttered anymore. I've been going through things & tossing out a kitchen sized garbage bag full of junk every other week & I have to confess it feels good getting the junk gone. I've done a few runs to the Salvation Army to drop off as well & plenty of things got tossed in the recycling bin as well. My goal is by this time next year to have about 1/2 of the possessions I own now.

I even got rid of a ton of books which if you've met me might shock the hell out of you. I am hoping to get rid of even more of them. I'd like to keep the series that I re-read often, plus the ones I've read to near tatters. Of course I'll keep a lot of my knitting books, but even some of those could be pared down.

Which brings me to yarn, I've 171 that aren't involved in any projects. I've no problem having a lot of yarn, but I would like to stash down a tiny bit. I'm buying 12 skeins off a friend who's doing a destash, but it's sweater quantity & I'd like a few more sweater quantities. What I'd like to reduce is the oddball single skeins.

I am surprised at the amount of uselessness I own. I had taxes from when I was 21, pretty sure one doesn't need taxes from that far back. I had bills from when my daughter was born, those I'm going to scan in & if she wants to have them to see what she cost she can. I am going to send my marriage licence to my son, he was the only benefit to the whole thing so maybe he'll think it's nifty.

I am planning on taking pictures of some of this stuff & scanning others in so I can still look at the stuff, but there is no way I need the physical item anymore. I'm kind of a packrat so wish me luck!

The Saga of The Red Hat

This is a long & sad story. I got this beautiful yarn in a swap on Rav
DSCF0232_medium
Pretty isn't it? I think it was my most coveted yarn in my stash. I wanted to make the perfect hat from it so I hunted for ages til I found the 16 Cable Hat & of all the slouchy hats it's the best one (that might be opinion rather than fact).

So I start knitting it up.
DSCF0837
It was crocking like mad, but I figured it was just due to it being red & wasn't as bad as it seemed so I kept knitting along.
DSCF0850

I got done with it & snapped a shot before I washed it.
DSCF0942DSCF0958
Then I gave it a quick wash with some vinegar to set the color, you'd be shocked how much dye just poured out of this hat! It stained the pot, my sink was dark hot pink (I was able to scrub it out with BonAmi). This is the hat still wet after a few tries to set the color.
DSCF0961

Yeah, doesn't even look like the same hat does it? I tried a few more times to set the color & kept failing.
DSCF09851

Pretty hat for sure, but not the colors I wanted at all. I then gave it a bath with some OyxClean to see if that would help since it's not like it could get worse.
DSCF9141
It's not properly blocked in this shot, sorry. It's still pouring out color & I'm not sure what to try now.

I do need to say the dyer was awesome when I told her what was happening. Best guess is this is just a dud skein. She was happy to refund my $ when she saw photos & I've got more of her yarn & would shop there again without hesitation. Often with smaller shops you either get people who just blow you off when you lodge a complaint or you get awesome people & she totally falls in to that group. There is no way for me to stress enough this was a fluke cursed hat & not the fault of the dyer.

What's New!

Well it's been a bit so I do have a few new things to report. First up is my birthday present to myself. I bought myself this nifty circular needle case from The Loopy Ewe

namaste circular needle case - limenamaste circular needle case - lime
Isn't it cute? It's a Namaste circular needle case, I went with the color Lime. Right now it has all my needles in it, but I hope as I get more needles to have 2 or 3 of these so I can split up brands.

I'm working on this hat right now, it still needs a tassel on the back & either tassels on the front or i-cords if I'm getting low on yarn.
My Capucine
It's slightly more muted in real-life, my camera does this turn all red tones in to extra vibrant thing & I dropped out of the local camera club before I figured out how to fix that. I should pop in on a meeting one day & see if they can tell me what button to push to correct for that.

This is one of the 2 baby items I did. This one is for a friend who is due in Sept & doesn't know if she's having a girl or a boy. I just didn't want to knit in yellow or green, I fear the child will get enough of those & I think this comes off neutral enough.
Baby Hat
As for the other baby item, you'll have to wait a day or two until they've gotten it in the mail. I don't want to ruin the surprise.

Baby Things

I've 2 babies I'm knitting for & both their moms read this blog so it will be picture free on the baby stuff for a bit. What I did want to say about baby stuff is how much fun it is & how cute the things are. I am loving the one item I'm doing that's got feather & fan in it. Between it being tiny & it being f&f it's going super fast. It's also a nice break from the hats.

On that note here are 2 of the hats I've finished up in the last few days.
Green Cable HatCloudy Grey Hat

I will have to write the saga of the cute red cabled hat I'd been working on another day. It's still to emotional at this point. Short story the color bled horribly when I washed it & I tried to set the color then & failed. Ugh!

On a sad note I haven't been to knitting in almost a month. Week one they were going to see a band in the park & I really didn't want to go see that, week two was a migraine & week 3 I opened the door to walk down & it was like hot pea soup instead of air & I just couldn't face an almost mile walk in that. So fingers crossed I can get my ass there this week!

Just keep knitting!

Been knitting up a few things lately. I knit up the world's ugliest gnome, but the cat seems to like it fine.
DSCF08761Gnome #1
I was going to leave him faceless, but my daughter hated that so I had to do the face after he was finished & that hat is hella small.

Making some serious progress on my hat, that should be done in over the weekend & I'll get some pictures up then.

I got in my beautiful yarn from Charlotte Yarn.
Lorna's Laces Panther Pride
Don't you love it?

I got in 2 skeins of awesome yarn from a knitting in Wales, one is dyed by her but I don't have a good picture of it, it's totally the color of a yummy pickle & this is the other that wasn't dyed by her.

Ugh

On day 3 of a migraine & feel like crap. Of all my medical issues headaches are the one I hate the most. This one is a "medium" migraine, I am able to get basic stuff done with it & I'm not bedridden, but damn do I feel like I've been hit by a truck. I go though bouts like this where they are really frequent, but not total horror shows. They really wear me down, it takes a lot of energy to deal with my normal pain, but add a few days of this on top & I really feel weak.

It's hot!

Today the weather is going to be 90° out & I have no a/c. The air is wet & humid too, this sucks. When we moved here we knew the a/c was old, around 20 years old so we hopped that it would last a year or two & we would save the $ for a new one. Well 3rd or 4th hot day it died. We went & found the manual & it turns out it's 31 years old! I can not believe an a/c could run that long. It's a Lennox & when we can afford a new one I'll be checking them out first.

My roommate's dad knew someone who was getting a new a/c & he's an HVAC tech so we bought his old unit &he's going to put it in today. Fingers crossed it goes in well.

Bee in My Bonnet

You ever get a bee in your bonnet about a yarn or a project? It's got to just be like it in in your head & then you've no clue where to find that yarn or that pattern? Well I wanted to knit a hat for my mom's friend's husband (can you follow that?) & I knew I wanted it to be Carolina Panther's colors. Well I don't have a yarn store in my town & not living in a Carolina I'd no clue where to find one of their official items so I could make sure the color matched right.

Was talking about this on Rav & lo & behold Lorna's Laces make a color called Panther Pride. Now best I can tell this wasn't a widely distributed color, but there was a shop called Charlotte Yarn & rumor had it they might have some in stock. So I called & they didn't have any on the sales floor, but with this being summer time & it being thick wool they thought there might be some in the back. About 15-20 minutes later I got a call & they had it! In worsted & bulky, we decided on the bulky since it's superwash & a bit softer. This store was staffed with the sweetest, most helpful staff you could ever wish to have help you.

I got 2 skeins & they yardage is nice so I should be able to either make a hat & mitten or a nice scarf for Jim. Will have to go hunt up the perfect pattern now!

Deer Ticks

Girl-child got bit by a deer tick the other day. I was really surprised how small they are. Just tiny little things! This is her tick next to a bar of poppy seed soap
Deer Tick
See? Totally tiny tick! I knew in my head they were small, but really I thought they'd be closer to dog tick sized.

So far she seems fine with no symptoms, but we did decide to put her on preventative antibiotics, so now we've got 2 weeks of that.

On slightly less icky things my hat is coming along well.

My sweater is coming along a bit faster now that I've switched needles.

Housework, ugh!

I hate housework (just like everyone else in the world I'm sure), but what I hate more than housework is being treated like a maid. I'm at home all day & my roommate works, so in her mind there is no reason I can't do the cleaning. While I've no problem washing the household towels & even doing the dishes, but my problem comes from being told I have to do it her way. See if you are stuck doing housework I think the least that ought to occur is doing it your own way.

Like the dishes, if I do them in the dishwasher it can take me 2 hours to unload & load the dishwasher even with my 5 yr old helping. It takes that long because I am disabled & have problems with my joints & very much with my hands. So If I'm going to be the only one in the house who does the dishes I'm doing them my way. Using paper plates (yep eco-bad, but I do recycle them) when possible, hand washing bowls & cups since that is actually easier than all the leaning over & reaching. Plus if I can only put away 1/2 the dishes I can still hand wash a few more later & add them in the strainer, you can unload 1/2 the dishwasher & then add more dirty stuff without making the stuff still in there dirty. I expect I'll get a huge lecture on how this isn't green & I'm ruining the planet, but if you really care that much why can't you load & unload your own dishes?

Halfway!

I am halfway done on the shawl of doom! I'm torn between putting it away for a bit so I can work on some other knitting or just keep plodding along. Part of the problem is this yarn & these needles are a crap combo, but I am worried if I switch to another set of totally different needles (wood to metal) that my gauge will change. Gah!
Halfway!

I'm working on another blanket square & am hoping to make a few of those over the next month. I am also still working on the grey hat, that yarn is so splitty that it kinda sucks to work with so it's going slower than my other hats.

Oh on the red sweater front I finally got another set of needles to work with, I just don't like the addi Lace needles, so now I've some regular addi needles. Will have to see if that helps, those Lace ones always made my hands feel gross.

Rambling Thoughts

I've nothing very interesting to post, nothing super exciting to talk about, but I still feel the urge to post something.

I'm feeling a bit at loose ends, as though a change of some sort is coming & I don't know what it is. I don't like the feeling at all. Maybe it's because girl-child needs to go to Mayo for a diagnosis, maybe it's because my sister's birthday is coming & I miss her, maybe it's because I need to work on my driving phobia, I just don't know.

I feel strange that I'm in my 30s & I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. That I feel like I'm not really an adult, just faking it. Maybe all the adults out there do fake it, who knows. I feel like lives are supposed to have a plan & a direction & I'm am very much lacking in both.

On the fiber front, I did get some yarn to dye, now I just have to mix up my dyes & get to it. Probably won't for a while, I think I want to get more yarns. I've one skein of fingering weight, 2 skeins of worsted, 2 skeins of aran & one of sport.

My office

I love the space of my office, but hate the look of it. I am planning on redoing it over the next few month/year. It's kind of ended up with a country feel which is 100% not me. It's very, very light purple/blue on 2 walls & wood on the other 2. I am planning on painting all of the walls white. I know the wood panel lines will show through, but I don't think I want to deal with the major work of taking the wood down right now.

After that I need to decide on the color I want to use in the room, am thinking either vivid red or deep purple. Which ever color I pick I'll be getting a couch cover for my loveseat. I was also suggested to use some foam tacked down to change the shape to cleaner lines & remove the "skirt" on the bottom of it.

It's going to be quite a bit of work & am figuring it will take me well in to fall to get it well on it's way to looking like I want it to. Once that's one the bedroom will be next, that's a hideous dark green, ugh!

Shawl Update

Still plugging along, it's a wonderful pattern & great year, I'm just not a fan of how long shawls take to make.
Flat Gaenor
As you can see I've got 7 repeats down the side & then 5 so far across the bottom. I was planning 14 across the bottom, but have decided when I get 7 across the bottom I'll weigh both halves & see if I've enough yarn to do a few more. Will have to see how it looks & all that when I get there.

This is the billionth hat, I know no one really wants to see if, but I like these little hats so here it is anyway.

Clouds

It's been cloudy & rainy for the past few days & the forecast is calling for days more of this. So there are no pretty pictures with nice natural sunlight, sorry.

The shawl is slowly, plodding along. I have 6.5 of the 14 repeats of the pattern done, once I finish the 14 I can do the 7 decreases. It's a lovely shawl, but I don't think I thought this shawl thing through very well. They take a long time.

The sweater doesn't really have anything new going on, the rib is a bit boring so it's going slow.

I started another hat, I love stuff that knits up quick. :D

A tiny invasion

There is a tiny invasion of one in my home. She moves so fast around the house I've not been able to trap her. These were the only pictures I could manage to capture to prove I've not imagined the whole thing.

When I woke this morning she was on the bookcase in my bedroom, but quickly ran out of the room when she saw I was awake...
DSCF0770

Then as I was making my morning cup of tea I saw her on the counter & by the time I got the fly swatter she was gone!
DSCF0766

I didn't see her for a while & assumed she had left, but you know what they say about what happens when you assume things. Turns out she was on the windowsill behind me & who knows how long she was there.
DSCF0760

I jumped out of my chair & ran in fright. A while later I went to get some yarn so I could knit to soothe my nerves, who do you think was hiding there? Yep, she was right there.
F0757

I don't know what to do about this. Do I call an exterminator or a priest or what?

So Tired

Yesterday was a bright sunny day, I woke up & felt good. I wanted to write you all (you all meaning probably no one, I don't actually think anyone reads this) a lovely post & put up some pictures. I had it all planned out, but Blogger was down for me. I guess some parts of the country were down & some were ok.

Today I woke up very, very tired. I'm missing about 3 hours of sleep due to the millipede that was on my wall above my bed last night. I was tucking in to bed & my roommate came to ask me something & spotted the evil thing. I am terrified of them & freaked out while she actually killed it. I then spent the next 3 hours wide awake & today feel like a zombie.

Perhaps I'll come up with something nifty to post this afternoon when I actually am awake rather than wandering about like a zombie. Maybe a cup of tea would help...

Squares

Do you remember the blanket square I was working on? Well I think I cast-on & frogged about 6-7 of them & finally got one that came out right!
DSCF0731
I know it's a little wonky & all, but for the most part I do like it. It's my first miter squares, so it was kinda neat to learn those.

I've also got my swatch drying, I measured before I washed it & I was a touch shy so hopefully it grew just a tiny bit.

On the Knitting Front

Check out the cutest new project bag I've got!
Cute Knitting Project Bag
It's long enough my 10" needles fit in there at a slight angle. I've got my green shawl in there, I didn't have a project bag big enough to fit the needles in so I was very glad to get this. Plus it's my favorite color. It looks like the fabulous woman who made it isn't selling them right now, but here's her Etsy store in case she starts to.

Almost done with my swatch for the other sweater, looks like it's 2 stitches shy (on 4") of gauge, but it's silk/wool & it hasn't been washed or blocked so it should come out ok.

I also got in some nice hat yarn, I'm thinking once one more project is done I'll cast on a hat. I'm thinking of doing one with a pattern I have to follow line by line rather than a stocking stitch one.

Girl Child's Annual Check Up

We went to the doctor for girl-child's annual appt & did get a referral for her to go down to Mayo to see if she has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) like I do. I'm 90% sure she does, I feel very conflicted about it. I'm glad we are figuring it out young so she has a better chance than I did of not becoming so disabled so young. I'm glad we'll not have to deal with docs thinking she's lying about her pain. I'm glad we will have the chance to teach her to care for her joints. I'm guilty about the fact I gave this to her. I'm guilty about what I know lies ahead. I'm sad for the fact she won't be "normal". I'm sad for the fact she will have this color many choices she makes in life. I'm worried about how severe hers will be. I'm worried about her future.

Having a genetic condition, that you know is painful & can be horrible & knowing you gave it to your child sucks more than I can put words to...

Shhhh!

Don't tell, but I've cast-on a tension square.
Tension Square

I did frog 2 projects, plus I've one more I count as frogged, but I'm too lazy to do the actual frogging. Leaves me with 2 wash cloths, 2 pair of socks, 1 shawl, 1 sweater. I think I'll try & bust my butt & get one of the wash cloths finished in the next few days. The sweater is the one I hope to finish by fall, the shawl I'd love to have done soon, but I can't memorize it so it's slow going. The socks are hard, I want to knit them, but my hands don't want to. I will finish at least one pair of them at some point in the next few months.

I am also trying to teach myself to crochet. I am working on doing a plain chain. I do know for many people with hand/grip issues that crochet can be easier for them & since I've got crabby hands I figure it can't hurt to mix it up. Plus I think it's time I admit I will never knit a blanket, I am too slow, it'd take me about a million years to get one done.

Toys

Ok, anyone reading this who is a parent will understand my complaint about too many toys, too much junk cluttering up a house. Amelia has a bit of greed about wanting new toys as most young children often do & we are working on curbing that greed & reducing the amount of toys.

Step one was to take every single toy in the whole house & remove it all to one room. That is known as the toy room. Every week she is allowed 10 toys from the toy room & no more. At the end of the week she can swap out any of the toys she would like to swap & keep any she would like to keep as long as the number she has is 10 (or less, but she doesn't ever pick less).

We've been doing this for around 2-3 months now & it's been going great. We've also done a toy purge of stuff she was ok with donating to the thrift store & I think it's getting to be time to do another purge. I'd like it if all her toys could fit in to 2 lg rubbermade tubs, right now it's about 4. When we were packing to move it was 8 tubs & that's just way too much.

I love this toy library system & it has really helped keep the house, or should I say every floor in my home, clean. I am also finding she is really focusing in & playing more with each toy instead of becoming distracted every 4 seconds by another toy.

Birthday

Yesterday was my daughter's birthday & her pre-school does a wonderful field trip at the end of each school year. She got to go to by train to a local toy shop & even got to ride a carousel. I loved that it timed up for her birthday, that was great. We both had a great time on the train, I think that was my favorite part. She was a bit worried about riding the carousel as she's never been on one, but she did say she liked it when it was over. Her favorite part was shopping I'm sure, she didn't even want to stop shopping to get an ice cream, lol.

It was really hot yesterday & that sucked. The heat really messes with me bad & by the time we got back to town & had to walk back it was more than 5 degrees hotter than they had predicted that morning. I almost didn't make it back home without blacking out. I have a very firmly set limit on how hot out it can be for me to not get sick & that 5 degrees pushed it too high for me. Amelia was a trouper about it though.

We did dine at her favorite place to get a treat MickeyD's, lol. Nothing like a crappy meal, uh I mean, happy meal to top off the day.
